چکیده

HE recombinant off spring of Drosophila melanogaster females having free X T chromosomnls heterozygous for a long inversion are limited to even multiple crossover types. But from inversion heterozygotes in which the two X chromosomes are attached at their centromeric ends (= tandem metacentric compound X chromosome), single crossovers are frequently recovered. The synaptic configurations of these two structural heterozygotes are compared in Figure 1 . Although this difference in recovery of single crossovers could be explained by supposing the products of single exchange in free X inversion heterozygotes to be inviable, there is no demonstrable lethality of zygotes produced by such females. The resolution of this apparent paradox was presented by STURTEVANT and BEADLE (1936) in their classic paper on the mechanics of crossing over in inversion heterozygotes; they proposed that single exchanges do occur in free X inversion heterozygotes, that the products of such exchange are invariably excluded from the functional egg nucleus, and that excluston is accomplished by directed orientation of noncrossover chromatids towards the terminal products of the second meiotic division. The cytological and genetic consequences of various kinds of exchange in free X inversion heterozygotes and in tandem metacentric compound X chromosomes

Exchange within heterozygous inversions in Drosophila melanogaster.

The exchange behavior of non-attached, whole arm, X chromosome inversions was reexamined using nondisjunction in XXY females as an indirect measure of the frequency of nonexchange tetrads. Crossing over is quite normal in these inversion heterozygotes and is independent of the arrangement of the basal heterochromatin.

Lack of underdominance in a naturally occurring pericentric inversion in Drosophila melanogaster and its implications for chromosome evolution.

In(2LR)PL is a large pericentric inversion polymorphic in populations of Drosophila melanogaster on two Indian Ocean islands. This polymorphism is puzzling: because crossing over in female heterokaryotypes produces inviable zygotes, such inversions are thought to be underdominant and should be quickly eliminated from populations. The observed fixation for such inversions among related species h...

Aconitase and Developmental EndPointsasEarly IndicatorsofCellularToxicity Induced by Xenobiotics in Drosophila Melanogaster

Background: In this study, the toxicity of the different xenobiotics was tested on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster model system.  Methods: Fly larvae were raised on food supplemented with xenobioticsat different concentrations (sodium nitroprusside (0.1-1.5 mM), S-nitrosoglutathione (0.5-4 mM), and potassium ferrocyanide (1 mM)). Emergence of flies, food intake by larvae, and pupation h...

A positive correlation between crossing over within heterozygous pericentric inversions and reduced egg hatch of Drosophila females.

XTENSIVE chromosomal polymorphism, probably due to pericentric inverE sions, has been reported in animals as dissimilar as grasshoppers (WHITE 1958) and mice ( OHNO et al. 1966). Inversion polymorphism is also prevalent in natural populations of many Drosophila species, but rarely are the inversions pericentric. The infrequency with which pericentric as compared with paracentric inversions are ...

Some of Drosophila Melanogaster

LL present theories of crossing over tacitly assume that events in one tetA rad (at least as far as crossing over is concerned) are independent of those occurring in the other tetrads of the cell. Yet as long ago as 1919 STURTEVANT suspected that the presence of a heterozygous inversion in one chromosome pair increases crossing over in a non-homologous pair of chromosomes. The effect was defini...
